California was fantastic! Greg and I had a whirlwind trip to Southern and Northern California. It was wonderful to see so many of our friends and family! I also enjoyed meeting many new people. We felt like jet-setters.
First, we went to an author's tea at Pilgrim Place in Claremont, California. We had about 45 attendees. About half had already read the book. The questions were interesting, challenging and we had a GREAT discussion. The feedback was wonderful.
Next, we flew to Oakland for events in Concord and Berkeley. A big THANKS to Clayton Books and Pegasus Books for hosting the book signing events.
Everyone at Clayton Books also had a special treat - my cousin, Jesse Hernandez was on hand to sign the book cover with his awesome drawing! He was a huge hit. THANKS JESSE!
While in Concord, I attended a book club. This was Aunt Julie's group. I had a fun time discussing the book with this dynamic, fun group of women. I really enjoyed the evening. I look forward to more book club discussions in the future.
I also want to thank my Dad, stepmom Barbara, Aunt Julie and Uncle Charlie for all their work and coordination of the California events. We had a blast!

The group, The First American Women's Friendship Delegation, was among the first group to travel to communist China since the early 1950s. The resulting documentary of the group's trip was nominated for an Academy Award.
Follow Kendall's extraordinary, unique, life-altering experiences up through the age of 14 as she makes an amazing journey from Berkeley to Beijing.

1st Book Signing a Success
Thank you to everyone who came out for the book signing at Otowi Station Bookstore. It was a great success. The bookstore sold about 40 books! We had a lot of fun. There was a nice mix of people I know from the community (including dear friends and coworkers) and people who read about the book in the Monitor newspaper. A number of folks had already read the book and bought a second (or third) book to give to friends.
I was initially impressed by my Uncle Dave and Uncle Danny who drove the hour and a half from Albuquerque for the event. That was until my Aunt Julie and Uncle Charlie shocked me by showing up unannounced all the way from California. My husband's parents and sister, Melissa, also came to the event.
If you missed the fun - the book is 20% off at Otowi Station through July.

NAMI donation
We are donating 5% of all Berkeley to Beijing author profits to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Since it began in 1979, NAMI has been dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness.
Greg and I chose NAMI to honor my mother's memory and her sustained demonstration of humor, grace and love in the face of adversity. It is also in hopes of both increased research to find better medical treatments and pressure on government for better support/programs for people living with mental illness.

BOOK PUBLISHED TODAY
Today, I got a wonderful surprise. My publisher, iuniverse, contacted me to say they were sending one hardcover and one trade paperback to me to validate that the printer has everything set up properly. I was thrilled.
To my surprise, I found out the book is live and available at the iuniverse website. TODAY IS MY PUBLISH DAY!!!!!! I can't tell you how thrilled I was to realize I'm a published author. YIPEEE!
The hardcover is $27.95, trade paperback (I like this style the best) is $17.95 and the adobe digital edition (e-book) is just $6. But, I was surprised by the shipping price if you buy the books from iuniverse. It is pricey.
In a few weeks, the book will be available on Amazon & Barnes and Noble websites. There will also be a Kindle and Sony version available in a few weeks.
Greg is almost done with my website Some pages are still under construction. Once my supply of books arrive, I will be selling inscribed (autographed) books via my website. I will post once the website is ready for prime time.

Final Proofing
I have the book proofs back from the publisher for my final approval. Once I sign off on the proof, the next step is printing!! We are getting closer.

Beijing International Book Fair
The publishing process is progressing. We don't have the exact release date yet. But, we did receive some exciting news. My publisher will be featuring Berkeley to Beijing at the Beijing International Book Fair to be held in September 1-4, 2009. Wish I could be there along with my books.

Welcome! My book, Berkeley to Beijing, is currently at the publisher. It should be available for purchase in late April or early May. Greg is creating a book website. The book will be available online from our website, Amazon and Barnes&Noble (at a minimum). I don't know yet which physical stores will carry the book.
It took me over a decade to write this book. Yet, I can't believe I am finally discussing book cover design, back jacket text and photo positioning. As we have news and dates get solidified, I will keep you informed here.
