Today was one of the first beautiful, warm days in Northern New Mexico. We were thrilled to go to Santa Fe and attend Garcia Street Books' Meet the Author Series. Shirley MacLaine was there to chat with the crowd and sign her new book "I'm Over All That And Other Confessions."
Shirley spoke to the 350+ people gathered for the event. While we waited for Shirley's arrival(she was and is always on time), we saw a Buffalo Dance in the courtyard at the Inn and Spa at Loretto in Santa Fe near the Plaza.
Shirley talked and answered questions from the audience for over an hour. I don't want to spoil her book for those of you who haven't read it yet. Her book is VERY entertaining, inspirational, motivational and funny. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Today, Shirley talked about the younger generation's work ethic or lack thereof; December 21st 2012 and the alignment of the planets; past life exploration and reincarnation; UFO's and the high concentration of crystals in Northern New Mexico due to the volcano that resulted in the Valles Caldera; memories from her many travels and, of course, her beloved Teri. The audience loved her talk. It was a lot of fun.
We then queued up to get Shirley's signature. She was wonderful.

Happy Birthday Shirley and Greg!
Today (April 24th) is Shirley MacLaine's Birthday. A birth date she shares with my husband, Greg.
I loved reading "I'm Over All That." Shirley MacLaine's newest book. It has been fun to see her on Oprah, the View, etc. It is an interesting read. I was bummed there weren't any pictures, but I enjoyed her insights.

HOLIDAY BOOK GIVEAWAY!
Today is the launch of the Indie Books Holiday Giveaway Event! I told you about a wonderful website I found - goodreads. Through this site, I met another independent author, Darcia Helle. She had the great idea of putting together a contest to giveaway books from indie authors. Here is more information about the big event:

AAUW Book Club
On Monday night, as the snow fell, I joined the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Non-Fiction Book Group for a discussion of Berkeley to Beijing.
Thanks to Denise George for hosting and to Rosmarie Frederickson for the invitation. The motto for New Mexico AAUW is "Empowering Women to take charge of their lives"
It is always fun to meet with book groups. Each one is unique and takes a different approach to discussing the book. We had a lively talk and I was thrilled to hear several of the women talk about their journeys to China. The group had a mix of ages which made the discussion of how the role of women in China and the US had progressed over the decades, raising kids, socialism vs. feudalism, China and Shirley MacLaine.
I am working to compile a list of the book questions from the different book groups I've joined.

I like the author search functions and the lists that include the book series in numeric order. Looks like a good social network with fellow book lovers and many authors. Lots of interesting groups, blogs and chat opportunities. It also can tie into Facebook, if you so choose.

There are two distinctive layers to this remarkable story. The first is a simple telling of one woman’s remembrances of childhood. Boutilier Kendall captures the love she felt for her family alongside her childhood traumas with grace and honesty. Though her life was extraordinary, readers will empathize with the loneliness and anxiety that she felt in her youth. The second layer of the book is a firsthand account of the social and political climate of the 1960’s and 1970’s.
Karen Boutilier grew up in the center of the civil rights era, the anti-Vietnam War spectacle and the National Organization for Women’s equal rights push. For example, she writes of trying to drive home during the riots that followed the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “I screamed and jumped when a man smashed our front window with a bat. Our eyes met and I had to look away. The intensity of his hatred was boring a hole through my eyes. Dad said to just stay calm. No one was there to hurt us. I thought Dad might want to tell that to the man with the bat.”

California was fantastic! Greg and I had a whirlwind trip to Southern and Northern California. It was wonderful to see so many of our friends and family! I also enjoyed meeting many new people. We felt like jet-setters.
First, we went to an author's tea at Pilgrim Place in Claremont, California. We had about 45 attendees. About half had already read the book. The questions were interesting, challenging and we had a GREAT discussion. The feedback was wonderful.
Next, we flew to Oakland for events in Concord and Berkeley. A big THANKS to Clayton Books and Pegasus Books for hosting the book signing events.
Everyone at Clayton Books also had a special treat - my cousin, Jesse Hernandez was on hand to sign the book cover with his awesome drawing! He was a huge hit. THANKS JESSE!
While in Concord, I attended a book club. This was Aunt Julie's group. I had a fun time discussing the book with this dynamic, fun group of women. I really enjoyed the evening. I look forward to more book club discussions in the future.
I also want to thank my Dad, stepmom Barbara, Aunt Julie and Uncle Charlie for all their work and coordination of the California events. We had a blast!

1st Book Signing a Success
Thank you to everyone who came out for the book signing at Otowi Station Bookstore. It was a great success. The bookstore sold about 40 books! We had a lot of fun. There was a nice mix of people I know from the community (including dear friends and coworkers) and people who read about the book in the Monitor newspaper. A number of folks had already read the book and bought a second (or third) book to give to friends.
I was initially impressed by my Uncle Dave and Uncle Danny who drove the hour and a half from Albuquerque for the event. That was until my Aunt Julie and Uncle Charlie shocked me by showing up unannounced all the way from California. My husband's parents and sister, Melissa, also came to the event.

Beijing International Book Fair Sept. 3 – 7, 2009
New Book Chronicles the Amazing Journey of a Young Activist in the 1960’s and 1970s
SANTA FE, N.M. – “My childhood was different from most,” writes Karen Boutilier Kendall in her new memoir, Berkeley to Beijing: The Journey of a Young Activist (published by iUniverse). “I lived, breathed and experienced history in a way that exposed me to amazing, fascinating and sometimes frightening situations.”
Kendall, a preacher’s daughter, recalls a unique upbringing living in communal strike houses with volunteer strike workers, runaways and prostitutes. Her playmates and babysitters were the children of Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta of the United Farm Workers. “While other kids drew in coloring books, I made picket signs. I went on civil rights and anti-war protest marches and walked picket lines,” she recalls. Kendall not only witnessed, but experienced the horrors of bigotry and violence while navigating both family and political upheaval.
In 1973, at age 12, Kendall received a call from actress Shirley MacLaine inviting her to travel with a group of women to China. Kendall had met MacLaine a year before while campaigning for George McGovern. The group, The First American Women’s Friendship Delegation, was among the first group to travel to communist China since the early 1950s. The resulting documentary of the group’s trip was nominated for an Academy Award.
“Berkeley to Beijing is the remarkable, well-written story of a young girl's coming of age in the midst of the turbulent 1960s & 1970s. It is also the untold story of a brave, committed family struggling to stay together while throwing themselves into the heart of Cesar Chavez' farm workers' movement,” exclaimed Rev. Karen Boutilier Kendall currently lives in the mountains of northern New Mexico. We are donating 5% of all Berkeley to Beijing author profits to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Since it began in 1979, NAMI has been dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness.
Greg and I chose NAMI to honor my mother's memory and her sustained demonstration of humor, grace and love in the face of adversity. It is also in hopes of both increased research to find better medical treatments and pressure on government for better support/programs for people living with mental illness.
