California was fantastic! Greg and I had a whirlwind trip to Southern and Northern California. It was wonderful to see so many of our friends and family! I also enjoyed meeting many new people. We felt like jet-setters.

First, we went to an author's tea at Pilgrim Place in Claremont, California. We had about 45 attendees. About half had already read the book. The questions were interesting, challenging and we had a GREAT discussion. The feedback was wonderful.

Next, we flew to Oakland for events in Concord and Berkeley. A big THANKS to Clayton Books and Pegasus Books for hosting the book signing events.

Everyone at Clayton Books also had a special treat - my cousin, Jesse Hernandez was on hand to sign the book cover with his awesome drawing! He was a huge hit. THANKS JESSE!

While in Concord, I attended a book club. This was Aunt Julie's group. I had a fun time discussing the book with this dynamic, fun group of women. I really enjoyed the evening. I look forward to more book club discussions in the future.

I also want to thank my Dad, stepmom Barbara, Aunt Julie and Uncle Charlie for all their work and coordination of the California events. We had a blast!

Kendall had met MacLaine a year before while campaigning for George McGovern. The group, The First American Women's Friendship Delegation, was among the first group to travel to communist China since the early 1950s. The resulting documentary of the group's trip was nominated for an Academy Award.

Karen Boutilier Kendall currently lives in the mountains of northern New Mexico and has a bachelor's degree in accounting. She is the business operations manager for the Los Alamos County Utilities Department and will celebrate her 30th wedding anniversary this summer.

Thank you to Sharon Stover for inviting me to speak at Kiwanis this week. It was a lot of fun. Great questions from a wonderful group of people! Also, thank you so much to each person who bought a book! The response was heart warming.

Next week I am meeting with a Los Alamos book club. This is my first book club discussion about Berkeley to Beijing. Looking forward to it!

1st Book Signing a Success

Thank you to everyone who came out for the book signing at Otowi Station Bookstore. It was a great success. The bookstore sold about 40 books! We had a lot of fun. There was a nice mix of people I know from the community (including dear friends and coworkers) and people who read about the book in the Monitor newspaper. A number of folks had already read the book and bought a second (or third) book to give to friends.

I was initially impressed by my Uncle Dave and Uncle Danny who drove the hour and a half from Albuquerque for the event. That was until my Aunt Julie and Uncle Charlie shocked me by showing up unannounced all the way from California. My husband's parents and sister, Melissa, also came to the event.
